California High School Exit Exam

On October 7, 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown suspended the administration of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) by signing Senate Bill (SB) 172.

This new law took effect on January 1, 2016, and waives the requirement for Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD) to administer the CAHSEE to prospective graduates in the classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018.

The law also allows the district to begin issuing diplomas on January 1, 2016, to those students who met their graduation requirements and completed 12th grade between the 2003–04 and 2013-14 school years, but who may not have passed the CAHSEE.

Meanwhile, students who met their graduation requirements and who completed 12th grade in 2015, but who may not have passed the CAHSEE, can immediately receive a high school diploma under SB 725 (Hancock), which was enacted on August 26, 2015.

Please contact Campbell Union High School District, if any of these circumstances apply to you or your children.

The California Department of Education (CDE) has compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) on the CAHSEE section of their website at: www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/cahseesuspendfaq.asp.

You can also call the state’s High School & Physical Fitness Assessments Office at 916-445-9449 or e-mail them with additional questions at CAHSEE@cde.ca.gov.

Beginning with the class of 2006, California requires that students pass the California High School Exit Exam in English Language Arts and Math, in addition to satisfying all other requirements to receive a diploma. Students must take the exam one time in their 10th grade year, and if necessary, may take the exam twice as juniors and up to three times as seniors.
