To Teach in California public schools, you must:

  • Possess a valid California or out-of-state teaching credential/certificate
  • Pass the CBEST test
    • If you hold a valid teaching credential in another state, you will be eligible for a one-year waiver of the CBEST requirement.
    • If you have passed the CBEST test and meet certain educational requirements, you may be eligible for a temporary permit to teach.

Certificated Hiring Process

  1. Complete an application
    Please complete your application as soon as possible. As part of the application process, you will need a letter of application, a resume, a personal statement, and two letters of recommendation along with copy of current transcript and credentials.
  2. Be selected for an interview
    Principals and supervisors screen completed applications and select candidates to interview for particular positions.
  3. Interview
    Candidates are contacted by the Human Resource Center and interviewed by CUHSD principals and supervisors, district or site panel.
  4. Teach a demonstration lesson (if possible)
    Candidates may be requested to teach a demonstration lesson for a CUHSD team. We prefer to observe you teaching in your own classroom. If you are not currently teaching, you may teach a demonstration lesson in one of our schools. If distance makes this impossible, we will accept videotaped lessons.
  5. Reference check
    We will conduct a complete professional reference check.
  6. Conditional offer
    The Human Resource Department will contact you with a conditional offer to discuss salary, placement, benefits, and general employment terms.
  7. Approval by the Board of Education
    CUHSD Board of Education approves all teacher hires.

Substitute Teachers

CUHSD substitute pay is $110.00 per day.
