The Gifted and Talented Education
(GATE) program provides unique opportunities for high-achieving
and underachieving students in secondary schools who have been identified
as gifted and talented. Special efforts are made to ensure that
students from varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds are
provided with full access to these opportunities.
Program Model
GATE curricular components are required to be planned and organized
as integrated differentiated learning experiences within the regular
school day and may be augmented or supplemented with other differentiated
activities related to the core curriculum, including independent
study, acceleration, postsecondary education, and enrichment. In
CUHSD, GATE program services are provided through the honor’s
and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Identifying Gifted and Talented Students
Generally, GATE students are identified by our partner districts
(K-8); however, CUHSD has an identification process in place and
does use it as needed. Identification is made using a combination
of data such as achievement test scores, student portfolios, teacher
recommendation, report cards, quality of courses taken, and an interview.
