California Department of Public Health (CDPH) COVID-19 Updated Guidance
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently updated its COVID-19 Guidance regarding Isolation and Testing. The updated guidance moves towards a more symptom-based approach to COVID-19 and REMOVES the recommendation for a 5-day isolation period following a COVID-19 positive test. COVID-19 testing will be available for students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms or are exposed to a person who has tested positive with COVID-19. Take Home Rapid Tests are available in the school offices until test kits run out.  Masks are also available at all CUHSD school sites and offices.

COVID-19 possible symptoms include: fever of 100.4 F or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, sore throat, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Recommendations for People Who Test Positive:

Individuals with symptoms:

  • Remain at home for at least 24 hours from the day of symptom onset.

  • May return if 24 hours have passed with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications AND symptoms are mild and improving.

  • Recommended that students wear a mask when around other people indoors for the10 days after they become sick or test positive. You may remove a mask sooner than 10 days if you have two sequential negative tests at least one day apart.

  • Staff are required to wear a mask at work for 10 days after becoming symptomatic or testing positive.

Individuals with no symptoms:

  • There is no required isolation or exclusion.

  • If you develop symptoms later, follow the symptom guidelines above.

Close Contact to a Person with COVID-19

"Close Contact" is defined as sharing the same indoor airspace for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period of time.  Spaces that are separated by floor-to-ceiling walls (e.g. offices, suites, rooms, waiting areas, bathrooms, or break or eating areas that are separated by floor-to-ceiling walls) must be considered distinct indoor airspaces.

  • May continue to attend school/work as long as they are not symptomatic.

  • Students and staff with symptoms must stay home and get tested immediately.

  • Students and staff with no symptoms who are also at a higher risk for severe COVID-19 are encouraged to test within 5 days.

  • If you are going to have contact with people who are at higher risk for severe COVID-19, you are encouraged to mask indoors around such people for 10 days and consider testing within 5 days after the last exposure and before contact with high-risk people.

  • Those with symptoms can return if COVID-19 test is negative once symptoms improve and no fever for at least 24 hours without fever reducing medication.
