School Mental Health Billing Services

Background 
  • The State of California partners with schools and health plans to make sure that students can get mental health and emotional wellbeing support in schools across the state. Our schools already offer an array of mental health services to meet the needs of students; however, securing funding for these services can be a challenge.
  • Under the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) Fee Schedule program California’s health plans and insurers are now required to reimburse public schools (including K-12 school districts, colleges, and universities) for covered mental health services provided to students under the age of 26.
Services
  • Services will continue to be provided even if you do not provide insurance information, however, if you decide not to provide your child’s health insurance information, your school cannot access this critical source of funding for schools. 
  • All mental health services provided at the school will continue to be free.
  • Services that we bill for will not impact your insurance premiums or co-pays. You will not be charged and your insurance will not be impacted.

Confidentiality 
  • You and your child are entitled to privacy, confidentiality, and protections under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law that protects the privacy of students’ education records, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a federal law that provides the privacy and security of health information.
  • Your child’s health insurance information will not be shared with any outside entities, except as necessary to enable CUHSD to receive reimbursement for mental health services provided to your child.
Reimbursement for Wellness Services
Campbell Union High School District is excited to continue our work with the statewide mental health billing initiative (CYBHI). This work allows us to seek reimbursement from Medi-Cal or private insurance for services your student receives on campus. 
 
If you haven’t provided your insurance on your Aeries Parent Portal, you may be receiving a call from the district in the upcoming weeks. This information is needed in order to seek reimbursements for any services provided to your student through our Wellness Center or from your School Counselor, when applicable. 
 
These reimbursements do not affect your insurance premiums or co-pays. You will not be charged, and your insurance will not be impacted. If you are uninsured, your student will still receive services. 
 
You can provide the information needed in one of these ways:
  • On your Aeries Account Portal in the authorizations section. Please make sure to give consent for “CUHSD billing my Medi-Cal or health insurance for wellness services”
