CUHSD Student Climate Surveys in February

January 30, 2023

Dear CUHSD Parents and Guardians,

We want you to know that we always prioritize the well-being and experiences of our students. A top priority for our school district is to make sure that our schools are places where students are safe, supported, and valued.

I care deeply about these issues and that is why I am asking our students to please complete the California Healthy Kids Survey and the Datazone Socioemotional Learning (SEL) Survey. These two surveys will be administered to all students at their school site during February. The estimated time to complete both surveys is 20-30 minutes in total. A copy of the California Healthy Kids Survey can be seen by clicking here (for Spanish click here) and the Datazone SEL Survey can be seen by clicking here (for Spanish click here). These surveys will help the District to better understand students’ experiences and mental health concerns and to improve the support systems provided to students. Results from the survey will be summarized and reported to Principals, District committees, and the CUHSD Board of Trustees.

The California Healthy Kids Survey asks students about their feelings about school, their classroom, their knowledge of available mental health supports (e.g., counseling), and their ability to access those supports. Questions relating to mental health are not required to complete the survey and this survey is anonymous.

The Datazone SEL Survey asks students about their learning experiences, feelings of safety, social skills, and feelings about college and career support. This survey is confidential, and teachers will not be able to see student responses.

Based on the results of previous surveys, we have expanded our mental health services, invested in equity initiatives, and improved our communications and community outreach. If you choose to opt your student out of either survey, please talk to your student and contact your school by February 3.

Additionally, please note that parents and guardians will be asked to complete a parent/guardian climate survey about their experiences with their student’s school during February. Information about that survey will be provided in a separate message. We hope all parents and guardians complete this survey.

I appreciate your partnership as we further develop our understanding of these serious issues in order to provide students with the support they need to be successful.

Sincerely,

Robert Bravo, Ed.D.

Superintendent
