Message from Superintendent Bravo: Excessive Heat Wave in California

September 2, 2023

Dear CUHSD Community,

As you know, California is experiencing a record heat wave that is expected to intensify through the holiday weekend and extend through Wednesday, September 7, 2022. We want our educators, students, and families to stay safe and take appropriate precautions.

Your school’s principal and my staff will be evaluating the continuation of outdoor activities such as physical education and sports given the extreme heat conditions. It is important for students and staff to take extra care when performing outside activities and stay hydrated.

Below are some of the resources that principals and I consult as we evaluate activities for students with the heat wave in our area:

  • The California Department of Education (CDE) Excessive Heat webpage:

https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ep/extremeheat.asp

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness webpage:

https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/heattips.html

  • The California Interscholastic Federation Heat Illness webpage:

https://cifstate.org/sports-medicine/heat_illness/index

Over the Labor Day weekend, the City of San Jose will also be opening a cooling center in our community starting tomorrow:

Dates: September 3 - September 6, 2022

Location: Camden Community Center
3369 Union Ave., San José, 95124

Time: 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

While cooling down, residents have access to bottled water, free Wi-Fi, and outlets to charge devices. The City of San Jose requires face coverings be worn while inside the cooling center. For regular updates, please visit www.sanjoseca.gov/prns or follow @sjparksandrec on FacebookInstagram and Twitter.

I hope you and your family stay safe and enjoy the Labor Day weekend.

Sincerely,

Robert Bravo, Ed.D.

Superintendent
