Dear CUHSD Community,

As we close out 2020 and set our sights on the Spring semester and beyond, I want to acknowledge how far we’ve come. I also want to provide an update on what to expect in the new year.  Our staff and students have stood up to the challenge of distance learning and many students are excelling. However, we know many students struggle with getting what they need to be successful and we remain focused on improving outcomes for all of our students.

What to Expect in the Spring Semester

As you may know, the Board of Trustees approved a plan for a phased expansion of in-person high school services with the Spring semester beginning with Level 1- which continues distance learning as the mode of instruction and provides limited in-person services. There will be no change to the daily class schedule when you return from winter break.

The Board of Trustees will review local conditions and will consider whether or not to initiate Level 2 services at a Board meeting in mid to late January.   A breakdown of the different levels can be found below.

  • Level 1-Distance Learning + Limited In-Person Support (beginning of spring semester): Classes are offered in the mode of distance learning. Very small groups of students access in-person supports such as Connectivity Hubs. This level is an expansion of the support being offered on campuses currently.
  • Level 2-Distance Learning + In-Person Academic Support and Activities (Could begin no earlier than February 8): Classes continue to be offered in the mode of distance learning. Greater numbers of staff return to campuses to expand students’ opportunities for in-person support, including academic tutoring, grade recovery, and activities.
  • Level 3-In-Person Instruction for Select Students (date to be determined): In addition to Level 2 support, selected groups of students attend some in-person classes with minimal disruptions to master schedules. The prioritized groups include 9th-grade students who are struggling under distance learning and cohorts of students with disabilities.
  • Level 4-In-Person Instruction by Preference (not expected this academic year): In-person instruction is provided to students based on request. While we are aggressively recruiting in-person substitutes, tutors and aides, at this time, we do not believe we will have sufficient staffing to be able to achieve Level 4 this academic year.

Although there is still much uncertainty on what lies ahead, I look forward to continuing this journey together into a new year filled with possibilities.  Thank you for taking this journey with us and for your continued support and commitment to students.  I hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Robert Bravo, Ed.D.,
