Protecting Student Privacy and Safety Online

Despite schools being closed, learning is still happening. As we continue to adjust to distance learning, Campbell Union High School District faculty and staff are taking the necessary steps to ensure the highest level of security with online learning platforms.

The privacy and safety of our students, families and staff continue to be a top priority, which is why we are asking for your partnership to ensure a safe online learning environment. We are in this together.

Monitoring Student Behavior

We are asking for your help in monitoring student behavior online. If you are home with your student, while they are participating in online classes, please monitor that they are acting and speaking in a respectful and appropriate manner. All normal in-class rules also apply for online classes. Please review additional student behavior expectations by clicking here

Security Features and Zoom

Teachers may use Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Hangouts or Remind to interact and provide instruction to students online. Zoom, Google and Remind have signed the California Student Data Privacy Agreement “CSDPA,” which establishes security protocols and restricts them from sharing data with third parties.

While there have been recent reports about Zoom, at this time our District will continue to utilize this platform with added security features. CUHSD is monitoring and providing staff with Zoom instructions on security enhancements that protect against “Zoombombing,” which is when an uninvited guest appears in a Zoom conference room.

These security enhancements include:

  • Adding a password requirement for each meeting
  • Providing an automatic “waiting room” feature for teachers to allow students entry to the virtual classroom
  • Allowing only the teacher to present their screen, unless permission is given to a student

Student Anonymity Options

Teachers may record lessons and instruction with the intent to share the recordings for other students to access. Teachers will make a reasonable effort to ensure that privacy concerns have been addressed prior to publishing the video. If students do not wish to be recorded, they can notify their teachers, use a pseudonym such as their initials, remain muted, and camera off during the “live version” or take such other actions to remain anonymous/private consistent with the platform being utilized.

We appreciate your patience and support as we work together to continue supporting students with online learning.

Sincerely,

Campbell Union High School District
